Mid-block Crossing Over Highway 404 Connects Markham and Richmond Hill
York Region has completed Mid-block Crossing, a new four-lane road and bridge across Highway 404 just north of 16th Avenue, connecting Woodbine Avenue in Markham through Markland Street and Orlando Avenue to Leslie Street in Richmond Hill.
Mid-block Crossing opened this week. It is the result of a partnership between York Region, the City of Markham, and the City of Richmond Hill, a $110-million investment that included $65 million from Markham. Great cities are built on good connections, and this is one of them.
What the crossing means for our community
- A boost for local business. The new road ties together the employment and business areas on both sides of the 404, making it easier for customers and workers to reach Markham’s growing east side, including the new development around Cachet Woods.
- Relief on our busiest roads. A direct route across the highway helps ease congestion on our arterial roads, including 16th Avenue.
- More than a road. The project adds sidewalks and multi-use pathways for walking and cycling, plants thousands of native trees, and includes new protections for the Rouge River floodplain.
Next time you travel east-west between Markham and Richmond Hill, Mid-block Crossing is worth a try. It is already making the trip faster.
